Why Do We Ask for Donations?

The Dharma (Buddhist teachings) is free and available to all like the rays of the sun. We are happy to share these precious teachings with any and all who are interested. It is in the transmission of these teachings that we incur costs which we ask the sangha (Buddhist community) to share. Please be aware that no one is ever turned away from our practices or special events for financial reasons

Where does the money go?

  • rent at our new center space is $600/month.
  • gas and electric costs at our space run about $50/month.
  • lama visits incur costs for their airfare, our gift to them, and the translator. Translators charge up to $200/day, plus airfare.
  • miscellaneous costs include web hosting; printing of practice texts, study materials and flyers for events; flowers, incense and candles for the altar, etc.

We strive to remain transparent in our financial dealings, and to that end our previous year’s financial summary is posted at the center, and is also available to anyone upon request. The center is completely run by volunteer effort and donations. We ask that those who participate in our weekly practices and special events contribute to its upkeep either by putting cash or checks (made out to Three Rivers Dharma) in the donation basket, or by making a regular pledge of support.

On a deeper level, the dharma teaches that the path of the bodhisattva includes perfecting the six paramitas, and the first of these is generosity. Generosity is the practice of giving fully without attachment and is a skillful method by which all the Buddhas attained enlightenment through the collection of merit. By asking for donations, we are giving you the opportunity to practice the perfection of generosity. There are many methods of practicing generosity and we welcome you to donate money, services and dharma practice to maintain the center as an authentic place for the study and practice of the Buddhadharma.
