Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I'm interested in attending one of your meditation sessions, but I'm just learning about Buddhism. Is it okay if I come?

A: Yes, absolutely. In general we recommend that people come to the Sunday session if they are new to meditation. It is a little more basic and easier to understand. Also, on Sundays there is time afterward to have a cup of tea and socialize/ask questions with the folks who come regularly. However, if you prefer the Wednesday session, you are welcome to come then. At any of these sessions, if there are new people then the practice will be explained ahead of time.

Q: Is there a dress code for the practices at Three Rivers Dharma Center?

A: No, but we do ask that you dress modestly, and do not wear any perfume, cologne or other strong scents. Just dress comfortably. It is customary to remove shoes in the shrine room.

Q: Do I have to sit on a cushion?

A: No. Most people sit on cushions, cross-legged; but there are also chairs available.

Q: Is the center handicapped accessible?

A: Unfortunately, no. The center is located in a ground floor apartment, and there are about 4-5 steps down from street level to the door. Once inside, there is one step down from the shrine room to the level where the bathroom is located.

Q: I am a student, taking a class in world religions, and we are required to visit a religious tradition different from that in which we grew up. I would like to visit the center to see what it's like, and possibly interview someone for my paper. Is that okay?

A: Yes. As in question 1, we generally recommend that people come to the Sunday session. Please be advised that if you attend our meditation session, you are expected to participate by saying the prayers and trying to meditate. Since our meditation practice is not a show for spectators, it is not acceptable to sit in the back and just watch. After the meditation is over, there will be time when someone can answer your questions.

Q: I'm a teacher and would like to bring my class to your center. Is that possible?

A: Maybe. The Three Rivers Dharma Center space is not very large; about 15 people is the limit to what can comfortably fit in the shrine room. It's really not possible to bring a class to a meditation session; but if you would like to visit the center at off hours, then arrangements can be made. If you are sending or encouraging your students to come to our center, please do not send more than 3-4 at a time or they will overwhelm the space.
